Do you worry about your teen speeding down Dixie Highway?

If you live near the Dixie Highway, you know that it's dangerous. The average number of accidents on the highway each year reaches no less than a staggering 1,000. For many parents, the thought of their teenage drivers becoming part of that statistic causes fear and trepidation. To make matters worse, most teens tend to drive faster than they should, which puts them at greater risk of crashing.

Everyone drives above the speed limit on occasion, but experienced drivers often control their vehicles better than teens who have little to no experience behind the wheel. As a parent, you want to do what you can to minimize your teenager's risk.

Some risky driving behaviors of teens

Teenagers tend to engage in the following risky behaviors while driving:

  • Driving too fast for conditions
  • Driving above the speed limit
  • Following too closely
  • Passing when not safe
  • Racing another car

Teenagers don't have the experience to know how a car reacts on wet, icy or snowy roads. Your teenager also might not know how to maneuver a vehicle in order to avoid a collision. Any of these behaviors or lapses in experience could lead to an accident.

Teach your teenager through example and practice

You might be tempted to speed through traffic in order to reach your destination. Whether you like it or not, your example affects how your teenager drives. As the parent of a new driver, if you curb your tendencies to exceed the speed limit, you could help teach him or her to adjust driving habits according to the road and traffic conditions. In addition, the more you allow your teen to drive, the more experience he or she gains. Under your supervision, that experience could ultimately save your child's life.

Accidents will happen

Unfortunately, all of the driver training you give your teenager might not keep him or her from becoming the victim of a serious crash. When another person fails to follow the rules of the road, your teen might be powerless to avoid an impending collision. Even an experienced driver could fail to stay safe.

Whether the accident occurred on Dixie Highway or somewhere else, if your teen suffered serious injuries or died due to the negligence of another, you have rights. You would probably benefit from talking to a Kentucky attorney about your legal options. A review of the circumstances might reveal evidence that could prove negligence in a personal injury or wrongful death claim, as applicable. A successful claim could provide you with the financial resources you need for your teenager's recovery or the expenses associated with a premature death.
