Motorcyclist collides with guardrail trying to avoid merging car

A 37-year-old motorcyclist lost his life late Friday evening, March 24 after being pushed off the roadway by a merging car along the Louisville portion of Interstate 264. The fatal motorcycle accident occurred in the eastbound lanes of that highway, nearest the exit for Bells Lane just before 9:30 p.m.

An investigation into the crash showed that the motorcyclist in this incident died after running into a guardrail in an effort to avoid a car that was merging on the highway. In speaking with the female driver of the vehicle at the scene, police say she maintained that she was attempting to move out of the way of two other motorcycles that were moving at a fast rate of speed when she noticed the third motorcyclist attempting to get out of her way.

She said she didn't see the motorcyclist until he had already attempted to move in the direction of the guardrail. By then it was too late.

A preliminary determination made by the coroner determined that either his or the vehicle operator's speed, or combination thereof, played a role in the causing the fatal injuries the decedent eventually succumbed to. The segment of the interstate where the crash took place was closed for hours as workers attempted to clear the scene.

Motorcyclists' narrow profile makes it difficult for vehicle operators to see them. When motorcyclists are struck or come into contact with objects such as guardrails, the lack of protection of the shell of a car that can cause the most harm to bikers in the event they are involved in a crash. Speed is an additional factor that can result in a higher risk of harm for motorcyclists as well.

If you have a loved one that has either been injured of killed in a motorcycle crash, a Kentucky attorney experienced in helping motorcycle crash victims can provide you with advice and guidance.
