3-vehicle crash kills Frankfort man on U.S. 127

A three-vehicle crash killed a Frankfort man on U.S. 127 on Friday night. Three other victims were transported to the hospital. The lone fatality from the accident was pronounced at the scene and the coroner's office said the injuries were consistent with the accident. The cause of the accident remains under investigation.

The accident involved a tractor-trailer going southbound and two vehicle headed northbound. The two vehicles have been identified as a Ford F-250 pickup truck and a Chevy Malibu. The victim who died as a result of the accident was the driver of the F-250.

According to witnesses, the F-250 was spinning out of control in front of the tractor-trailer, which hit it back into the Chevy Malibu. The first call to 911 came in around 8pm.

As a result of the accident, the tractor-trailer crossed the median of the roadway, barreled through the guardrail and traveled down a hill towards Cove Spring Park. The driver of the truck, the driver of the Malibu and a passenger in the Malibu were transported to the hospital with undisclosed injuries.

Witnesses stated that the cab to the tractor-trailer was submerged in a lake and the driver could not get his seat belt off. Witnesses to the accident ran to the tractor-trailer to pull the driver out for fear he would drown in the lake if the water came up high enough.

Both of the fuel tanks in the tractor-trailer were punctured in the accident, spilling close to 300 gallons of fuel on the highway, the grass and in the lake where the truck came to a stop. The Kentucky Department for Environmental Protection as well as a hazmat team responded to the incident to assist with the cleanup efforts after the truck was removed from the lake.
