What are the motorcycle laws of Kentucky?

Riding a motorcycle can be fun, exhilarating and a great way to see the nature Kentucky has to offer, but it can also be very dangerous. Operating a motorcycle without knowing the laws of the state can lead to an accident that causes serious injury to death. So, what are the motorcycle laws of Kentucky?

All motorcycles or mini bikes that do not have the proper state registration cannot be operated on the road. The same goes for operators of these bikes who do not have valid driver's licenses. The laws that apply to regular vehicles apply to motorcycles and mini bikes when it comes to registration and driver's license. A motorcycle can legally be operated without these documents only on private property.

Operators can be on a motorcycle without a helmet if they are over the age of 21 and have held a motorcycle license for more than one year. A passenger who wishes to ride on a motorcycle without a helmet must be over the age of 21.

If you are convicted of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol while operating a motorcycle you can face the following penalties in the state of Kentucky:

- License suspension: A mandatory suspension is issued for being convicted, arrested or refusing to submit to a breath test.

- Fines: Most fines are issued in conjunction with the suspension of your license.

- Community Service: This can be handed down by a judge in various forms.

Motorcycles, mini bikes and mopeds are all subject to the same laws and rules of the road in Kentucky as other vehicles. Just because these vehicles are smaller, they do not have the right to weave in and out of traffic at high rates of speed, use the shoulder illegally or ride on sidewalks to avoid the normal flow of traffic.

Prior to purchasing a motorcycle, make sure you know and understand the laws governing them in the state of Kentucky.
