Never Forget the Horror of Drunk Driving

It is one of those days etched in the memories of Bullitt County residents: May 14, 1988. Just an hour's drive northeast of Shepherdsville, the worst drunken driving accident in U.S. history took place in Carroll County on Interstate 71.

An impaired driver going the wrong way on the highway slammed his pick-up truck into a converted school bus. The impact ruptured the bus's gas tank and within moments there was an explosion and then flames engulfed the vehicle. Twenty-four children died that night, along with three adults.

Members of a Radcliff, Kentucky, church were headed home in the bus after a Kings Island outing. Forty people managed to escape the inferno, though 34 of them were injured.

Most of the school kids who died that day were 13 and 14 years old, though their ages ranged up to 17 and as young as 10. Victims were so badly burned that their parents needed to bring dental records to the morgue for identification.

The 34-year-old pick-up driver had a blood-alcohol content of 0.24 percent. That was more than twice the legal limit at the time. He eventually served 11 years in prison, a news report stated, though many would argue that that was not nearly enough.

Anyone tempted to drink before getting behind the wheel should remember that day in 1988.

For those who are injured by a drunk driver, and for those who lose a loved one in a DUI crash, the pursuit of justice can begin with a conversation with an attorney dedicated to personal injury litigation.
