How can you avoid a wintertime traffic accident in Kentucky?

The winter brings ice and snow, and with those weather conditions, an increase in the number of collisions that take place. Every year, over 100,000 people end up injured in motor vehicle accidents as a result of the weather.

How can you stay safer this winter? To start with, you need to make sure your car is ready for the snow. Brush off the vehicle and be prepared to let the windows defrost before you drive. Trying to drive through a small, defrosted area isn't a good idea. Any areas where ice remain on your windows reflect light and could blind you temporarily. You could be ticketed if an officer sees you, too.

Another thing to do is to slow down. If you always travel under 45 mph, it makes it easier for you to brake, accelerate and react if your vehicle begins to skid. In the case that you do start to slide on the roads, remember to turn your wheel in the direction of the slide to regain control.

Finally, don't get distracted. Whether you've made yourself tired by hiking up the heat too much or are interested in a phone conversation, you're taking your mind off the road when you need to be focusing. Remember that you are at a higher risk of injury if you aren't paying attention; pull over if you're drowsy or need to make a call.

Avoiding an accident starts with you, but if you're in a crash because of a negligent or distracted driver, you still have a right to file a claim. Be safe this winter, and remember that you can pursue compensation if you're hurt.
