The things that are distracting drivers may surprise you

Kentucky readers know there are many things that could cause distractions for drivers. While cell phones are one of the leading sources of distracted driving, there is new evidence to suggest that there are other dangerous sources of distraction of which drivers should be aware. One of these sources is the infotainment systems that now come standard in many newer vehicles.

From navigational systems to DVD players, many features could be deadly sources of distraction for drivers. Anything that takes a driver's eyes off the road for any amount of time, such as a radio or phone, could result in serious or deadly accidents.

The hidden dangers in newer vehicles

According to new research released from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, the infotainment systems in newer vehicles take the driver's attention from the task at hand rather than making the driving experience easier and safer. Some of the most distracting aspects of these systems include voice-operated features, touch screens and more. Consider the following facts discovered by the study:

  • Drivers using touch screens in their vehicles took their eyes off the road for an average of 40 seconds at a time.
  • Using these features can be just as distracting as reading or sending a text message while operating a motor vehicle.
  • When a driver removes his or her eyes off the road for even just two seconds, it doubles the chance of a car accident.
  • While many of these new technologies included in vehicles exist to improve driver experience, they can actually make it more dangerous.

One of the purposes of this new study is to help automakers see and understand how the designs of their vehicles could influence driver and passenger safety. However, a driver is always responsible for his or her poor decisions made behind the wheel, whether it involves speeding, distraction or other types of reckless or negligent behavior.

The rights of accident victims

Victims of accidents caused by distracted driving have rights. Whether the person who caused your accident was visually, physically or manually distracted at the time, you have the right to seek a full and fair recovery.

One of the most important steps you can take after an accident is to seek a complete evaluation of your case. This can help you understand your legal options regarding a potential civil claim and determine how you should move forward after a distraction-related accident.
