Watch out for these 3 summer driving hazards

Summer is nearly here, and with it comes the dangers of summer driving. While most people assume that summer is one of the best times to drive, the reality is that it, too, is dangerous, just like fall, winter or spring.

Summer has some unique factors that cause collisions. One is the risk of severe weather. A second is the likelihood of reflections and glare. Heat is a third.

Severe weather

Particularly in the western portion of Kentucky, the risk of tornadoes and severe storms is high in the early summer. An afternoon thunderstorm could quickly turn violent, forcing vehicles off the road. To prevent a crash, make sure you check the weather before you go out. If there is a risk of severe weather or a severe storm is headed your way, it may be a better choice to stay off the roads.

Reflections and glare

Another risk comes from glare and reflections. When the sun is higher in the sky, it causes a risk to drivers who could be blinded by its position. Combined with blacktop or tar roadways, metal and other reflective materials, there's a high risk of a driver not being able to see at some point during the drive. If that happens, it could take a few seconds to get into a better position. By then, a crash may be unavoidable.

Heat and humidity

Finally, drivers need to drink enough water and know when their vehicles are simply too hot to be inside. Without air conditioning, some hot summer days are extremely dangerous to the drivers in those vehicles. The inside of a vehicle heats up quickly, so it's better to avoid driving during the hottest part of the day without air. Keep in mind that you should be drinking plenty of water throughout the day to prevent dehydration, dizziness and fatigue, too.

These three summer driving hazards could quickly end your time on the roads. Be safe and remember to keep your eyes on the road.
