Cruiser struck by driver as officer diverted traffic

Imagine standing near your vehicle. It's disabled on the road, and you couldn't move it out of the way. The police come and begin to divert traffic. With everything in place, you don't think there's any risk to you, but moments later, a driver strikes the police vehicle.

This is more common than you may think. When there is a crash or construction, the police often come to help divert traffic. The problem is that it's easy for other drivers to look away and not notice diverted traffic. They may slam on their brakes, but many are too late to stop.

A June 1 report shows how important it is to pay attention on the road. According to the news, an officer had been diverting traffic around a tree that had fallen when a driver rear-ended the police cruiser. The crash pushed the cruiser into a barrier.

The driver who struck the cruiser did not need medical treatment, and no charges are expected to be filed. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured in the crash. The police reported that the officer's lights had been on at the time of the crash, so there is no information on why the driver didn't see the stopped cruiser.

In this crash, the officer got away without serious injuries, but that doesn't mean every crash will end that way. Drivers have to pay attention, especially in poor weather conditions or after storms like there have been in Kentucky recently. Downed trees, diverted traffic and hazards could block the roadway and make it unsafe to travel as usual.
