It is one of those days etched in the memories of Bullitt County residents: May 14, 1988. Just an hour's drive northeast of Shepherdsville, the worst drunken driving accident in U.S. history took place in Carroll County on Interstate 71. An impaired driver going the wrong way on the highway slammed his pick-up truck into a converted school bus. The impact ruptured the bus's gas tank and within moments there was an explosion and then flames engulfed the vehicle. Twenty-four children died that night, along with three adults.
